Ternipe - Portrait
Ternipe is a Roma band from Hungary. The band was founded in 1989 by young Roma musicians from the northeastern Hungarian region of Zabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg, near the Romanian border, and the city of Budapest. The term Ternipe originates from Romani and means "youth".
The members of the group have made it their goal to make the various and rich musical traditions of the Roma people accessible to a wide public. Her repertoire includes songs as well as instrumental songs.
At the beginning of its existence, Ternipe played mainly in youth clubs and community centres, and in this way gained more and more recognition in Hungary and Romania. In the 1990s they performed at folk music festivals in their homeland, and the band was also frequently booked abroad. Amongst others Ternipe played at the CIIOF World Music Festival in France in 1992 and at the WOMAD Festival in Germany in 1995.
The album "Del o Brishind", released in 1998, helped the band to gain further international acclaim. 2003 followed another album with the title "Pe mande o cheri". The song "Muro Shavo" was a real hit for the band. In 2006 followed the album "Hungarian Gypsy Music" and "Elmondom a világnak..." in 2008.
